The Caribbean rally is not dead. Nor, unfortunately, is it in the BVI, as originally planned. It is resting quietly in other parts of the Caribbean. The combined destruction wrecked by Hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria has meant that our first choice of sailing area, The British Virgin Islands, is not viable this year. Our preferred charterers, Sunsail, offered us several other options and we have all made different choices. Some of us will try again next year, some are sailing around Grenada and some out of St Lucia this November.
The BVI, which normally does not see a hurricane from one decade to the next, was the most severely damaged by Hurricane Irma, then took further hits from the following two. Other islands we might have visited, Antigua, Barbuda, Domenica have all sustained serious damage and they all need the support that tourism brings in order to rebuild their economies. We are very disappointed not to go but we feel it is just too soon and our presence there in November would just be a burden on their over-stretched resources.
