St Mary's Sound, Scillonian coming in

Just back from a wonderful cruise to the Scilly Islands via Falmouth, The Helford etc. We enjoyed marvellous settled weather but could only spend a few days in the islands - must return when we have more time.

Ariel's crew enjoyed the beaches and walks on the islands but left so many anchorages and islands unexplored. You really need a week to scratch the surface of this wonderful location.

14 boats made it to the Scillies, probably a Club record, of these 9 went on to Ireland (see Alan Fulton's blog) and the rest returned to home ports via more or less circuitous routes.

On our return trip we explored the new marina in Portland Harbour, wonderful marina, shame about the rather forbidding nature of the harbour. It will be a great venue for the Olympics however.

Ariel's crew consisted of wife Gill, Ian Barclay and John Strode. I can highly reccommend a visit to the islands for those of you yet to venture down there. Don't forget to stock up on pasties though, they kept Ariel's crew going !
