Unbelievably, the Fast Cruise fell yet again between two weather fronts resulting once more in strong winds mid-week and very light airs on the Saturday morning. Two of the anticipated boats did not participate, one as a result of the prevailing weather conditions (Ronhilda), and the other as a result of a dud engine battery (Kioni). Shearwater very kindly agreed to take over as race control at extremely short notice. The fleet proceeded to the start line as planned but given the extremely light winds and the latest forecast, the decision was taken to delay the start by 30 minutes to 11:30.  Some participants promptly took advantage of the extra time to have an early lunch / additional breakfast.

The starting stages of the race were very slow, with all of the yachts drifting toward the first mark in a flat calm. Fortunately, the wind did fill in a little later not only giving everyone a cracking sail but also enabling them all to complete the course. For the full race results for both the short and long courses, see the pdf links below.

The staff at Southampton Town Quay Marina were very helpful and made sure that all of the boats were safely moored. After reviving hot showers, rally participants made their way to Kuti’s Indian Brasserie where we were greeted by a splendidly attired gentleman with a ferocious waxed moustache.

We went upstairs to the Banquet Room where we were called by table by an equally resplendent maître d’, sporting full moustache, turban and sequined curly slippers, to the abundant 3-course buffet (‘as-much as you can eat’) – some took more advantage of this than others (mentioning no names), but all agreed that it was an excellent meal. Apparently diners can purchase the slippers and the regalia from the restaurant, however they do not have the Club logo and are not guaranteed to be waterproof.

The Marmalade Cup will be awarded at the End of Season rally in March, but a similar pot was awarded by Barrie Martin to Shearwater on the night for stepping in at such short notice as race control.

Given the very light airs at the start of the Fast Cruise, some decided to run an alternative race to the Nab Tower and back, see pdf below for the results.

Many thanks to Bill, Kate and Robin for the photos.

The next Fast Cruise will be on Saturday, 24 March 2018 to the Royal Southern YC on the Hamble for the Prize-Giving Dinner. We are hoping that our new President, Mike Golding, will be able to join us and to present the prizes. Booking will be available very soon.  In the meantime, please do let us know if you are planning to take part or would like to take part.
