The Thames Wilderness

Author:

Richard T Mayon White and Wendy Yorke

ISBN number:

9781 4081 8112 6

Published by Adlard Coles Nautical

This is a great book, although it did not immediately give me what I thought it would. Living in central London, I opened the covers hoping to find unknown wilderness right in SW1. In fact the book does not cover very central London Thames (east of Putney and west of Limehouse), because wilderness there is hard to find as Rob MacFarlane would probably agree. In that respect it disappointed, perhaps it was unreasonable to expect it to actually create new lands.

This book is written, as the title suggests, with the dual purpose of regaling the reader with an account of Rod and Lu Heikell's most recent circumnavigation, while giving copious advice and information on eating out, provisioning and catering on board along their 30,000 mile plus route.

Skipper's Mast and Rigging Guide

Author:

Rene Westerhuis ; Publisher: Adlard Coles Nautical

ISBN number:

9781408187982

This is an excellent, very detailed guide to all aspects of rigging, mast stepping, rig trim and maintenance. The descriptions and explanations are as detailed as manufacturers' instructions, but in a format and language designed to be used by a skipper and on deck. As part of the Adlard Coles' series of cockpit guides, all pages are laminated with a spiral wire spine so are easy to fold back and use while you work. The layout itself is designed to be helpful with check lists in clear numbered paragraphs on a red background and Tips as bullet points on a grey background.

A Thousand Miles from Anywhere

Author:

Sandra Clayton ; Publisher:Adlard Coles Nautical

ISBN number:

978 1 4081 8768 -5

The author has charted her own, her husband's and their yacht 'Voyager's journey across the Atlantic. In the middle of their ocean crossing, they celebrated Christmas and a short time later were visited by a Minke whale, luckily not yet full grown as measured against the catamaran he was about 26 ft long. He played and frolicked around the boat having a 'whale of a time'.
