Huge Achievement: Simon Kaye Earns RYA Yachtmaster Offshore

We are thrilled to announce that Simon Kaye has officially passed his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam!

The Yachtmaster Offshore is one of the most respected maritime qualifications globally, requiring a grueling 48-hour practical examination. Throughout the assessment, candidates are pushed to their limits by an RYA examiner, demonstrating mastery of navigation, boat handling, and leadership through both day and night exercises.

Simon certainly didn't have it easy for his finale—he faced force 8 gale conditions in the Solent on his final day. Navigating one of the world’s busiest and most complex waterways in those conditions is a true testament to his skill, composure, and seamanship.

Please join us in giving Simon a massive congratulations on this incredible milestone!

Club Night - Mapping the Titanic in 3D - Tuesday 31st March 2026

We are excited to welcome LSC Member Cieran Ryan, who will take us behind the scenes of the groundbreaking 2022 expedition to the RMS Titanic.

This historic mission resulted in the first-ever full-sized 3D digital scan—a "digital twin"—of the world’s most famous shipwreck. Achieving this at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters required unprecedented precision. Sonardyne served as a key technology partner, providing the advanced acoustic positioning systems essential for mapping the debris field and the hull in stunning detail.

Cieran will walk us through the engineering marvels and logistical challenges of capturing millions of high-resolution images to reconstruct the wreck in a way the world has never seen before.

Club Night - Cutty Sark - Tuesday 7th April 2026

The Cutty Sark is an icon of the Britain’s maritime history.

We are delighted to host Bill, who will be sharing his expertise on this legendary vessel. His talk will dive into why this is the case and provide some history of the ship. He will also provide details of the refurbishment project that restored her for the public’s benefit.

Sailing
One Meter World Championship at Datchet is only 8 weeks away.

For members looking for a unique spectator experience this spring, a world-class maritime event is landing right on our doorstep. In May 2026, the International One Metre (IOM) World Championship is coming to the UK, with the high-stakes racing hosted at Datchet Water Sailing Club.

This isn't just a hobbyist meet-up, it is a premier international competition featuring elite sailors from over 30 nations battling for the world title.

If you’ve never seen professional radio sailing, the level of tactical precision and "intellectual seamanship" is remarkable. Without being on the boat, helmsmen must rely on a perfect visual read of the wind and water from the shore, a discipline that translates directly to the skills we value at the Little Ship Club.
