Sapper and their Boats, Speaker Keith Cima
Keith Cima will highlight the contribution made by the Victorian Royal Engineers to develop new technology such as electricity, flight, steam power, diving, electrical sea mines, the world's first guided weapon which was so secret that no-one of the time knew about it - yet it was key to defending sea ports and coaling stations world-wide. The talk is based on contemporary photographs - photography being another Engineer responsibility.

700 Wrecks from the First World War, Speaker: Stephen Fisher, Maritime Archaeology Trust

Along the south coast of England lie approximately 700 wrecks from the First World War. The importance of the war at sea during the Great War is often overlooked, despite the significance it had on Britain’s war effort. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Maritime Archaeology Trust are investigating these wrecks, and the story they tell, for the duration of the centenary.

It’s all too easy to be to be drawn to the adventure and glamour of an Ocean crossing, but the reality is meticulous planning, careful preparation of the yacht and realistic selection of available crew. Graham Payne has been a club member for over 30 years, and in that time has made eight ocean crossings including one circumnavigation. These crossings were sometimes in a Rally, sometimes alone. He will share his experiences and give practical tips in this short talk.

Come and join us for the New Members Evening and hear club member David Clements recount how he took his Bowman 40 from Dartmouth to Spain for a summer cruising the Rias of Galicia in 2013. This little-known corner of Spain offers some of Europe's best cruising, with plenty of sheltered anchorages and fine modern marinas set amidst wonderful scenery reminiscent sometimes of the West coast of Ireland.

Travels with Tilman. Speaker: Bob Comlay

Mountaineer, navigator and arguably the finest travel writer of the 20th century, Bill Tilman’s climbing and sailing achievements rank amongst the greatest in the fields of 20th century mountaineering and deep sea cruising.
Bob Comlay made two Greenland voyages with him, in 1970 and 1971. The talks are illustrated with more than 100 photographs from his private collection and a number of private letters from his friendship which endured until Tilman’s loss at sea in 1977.
