Club Night: Single-Handed Transatlantic Race
After learning to sail on Badger Tech dinghies as an undergrad, Kass Schmitt started racing on Lake Michigan in the early 90s, but wasn't properly hooked on sailing until she was nearly 40. In 2008 she completed her first ocean crossing from the Canaries to Brazil as crew on the 1914 Linton Hope designed 40' yawl 'Cooya'. In 2009 she watched the Original Singlehanded TransAtlantic Race set off from Plymouth England towards Newport RI, and by 2013 she had her own Rob Humphreys designed wooden boat and a burning ambition to become the first American woman to complete this iconic race. How hard could it be? Answer: extremely.
Kass Schmitt, born in New York in the 60's, has recently started writing for the yachting press, with a monthly column covering sailing video blogs for Practical Boat Owner, and features about her own sailing for Yachting Monthly.
