Lindisfarne Radar Training Weekend - 17th & 18th August 2024
A weekend of Radar traiing on Lindisfarne for those new to boating or on courses, or those who simply
want to get more out of their radar sets
Radar can do far more than simply tell you from a blob on the screen that there is a ship or a buoy ahead of you, and if you do not alter course, a collision may be inevitable. Learn how to use the VRM and EBL for navigation position fixing. Targets and closest point of approach (CPA). Time to CPA (TCPA).Radar basics: Radomes and arrays. Dopplers. Radar horizon. Range =1.22 x √Antenna height + 1.22 √Target height. Perhaps see about 9 NM. A radome is light and lower power and makes a wider beam. Open array is heavier and has narrower beam and higher resolution and better performance at distances. Ships heading marker. Range rings. Range from middle to outer ring. In the menus. Radar sensitivity. Preset modes: choose eg harbour, coastal mode or offshore mode. Sensitivity control. Range control. RPM can be increased from 24 to 48 RPM. Target tracking. Touch target with finger, creates a vector. Automatic target acquisition. Offset mode increases look ahead. Relative motion mode. Radar overlay on chart. Charts show what is supposed to be there: radar shows what is there. Weather. Depths on screen and depths on chart. Radar guard zone
We will got out for the Saturday evening dinner, and then do a night pilotage exercise with radar.
