Why do the course

The RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster course extends the techniques learned on the Dayskipper course. Some aspects of navigation are studied in more detail and additional seamanship subjects are introduced.

Content

The main elements are additional plane navigation, weather theory and a more rigorous treatment of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea. Additional subjects are introduced, such as stability, basic weather prediction, more detailed use of almanacs and pilots and regulations for sailing in foreign waters. No mathematical knowledge, other than simple arithmetic, is expected.
