Isles of Scilly – still paradise
Submitted by Tim Crabtree on Fri, 13/02/2026 - 08:28Very little has changed in Scilly — it remains as close to paradise as you’ll find in UK waters and is absolutely worth the careful planning needed to make the crossing from the mainland. The passage is not difficult in the right conditions, but patience is key. Wait for a weather window that genuinely suits your vessel rather than pressing on regardless.
We pay close attention to swell height and direction as well as wind strength. Last year, light winds combined with a 1.5-metre swell at 11-second intervals made for an ideal passage from Helford to St Mary’s. The return leg is usually more comfortable with the swell behind you, though it required a stop at Mullion to wait for the tide around the Lizard.
This year we are planning a three-week visit in early May, weather permitting.
Once in Scilly, there is almost always somewhere to find shelter from wind or swell, although it can take a little effort and careful positioning. Moorings are available in St Mary’s, between Tresco and Bryher, and in the sound between Tresco and St Martin’s. For those willing to explore further, there are countless beautiful anchorages and white sandy beaches that reward the adventurous.
Make the effort to go. It is a special place, and you will not regret the trip.
