Club Night 18th Jan 2022: our annual evening with the Royal Institute of Navigation

Lt Cdr Finn Adam Egeland-Jensen MBE FRIN RN will cover the sequence of modernisation of the Fleet from 1960s, when open bridges and paper charts were the norm through to the shift to WECDIS and current navigation principals. His talk will also provide an overview of the RN training facilities, focusing on their navigation training courses, including the software and staff required in order to facilitate successful training of future generations of RN navigators for the Fleet.
Adam joined the RN in Sept 1981. He navigated 5 vessels from a Ton class Minehunter to a Batch 2 Type 22 Frigate before embarking on the Principal Warfare Officers course in 1994 and subsequently qualifying as a Specialist Navigator in May '96. Subsequent deployments included HMS DRYAD, navigating HMS ENDURANCE, Task Group Navigator onboard HMS FEARLESS, FOST and HMS NORTHUMBERLAND; as Fleet Surface Navigator, he brought WECDIS and WAIS into service. In 2009 he was seconded into a role as the primary Maritime advisor on Safety and Security for the Olympics. He returned to the Navigation School in 2015 and in 2020 he was asked to take over once again as OIC NTU.
