A talk exploring the history and continuing role of the Thames Watermen, told through the lifetime experience of Bob Crouch. Born into a family of Watermen, Bob worked on the river from an early age, competed in Doggett’s Coat and Badge, served in the Royal Navy, and later returned to the Thames as a bridge pilot and pleasure-boat operator. He went on to hold many of the river’s most senior roles, including Master of the Watermen’s Guild and H.M. Bargemaster, and was appointed Queen’s Waterman in 1980. Few people are better placed to bring the story of the Thames Watermen — past and present — to life.
