Alan Priddy will talk about the restoration of and future plans for Lively Lady and the charity he founded to provide sailing opportunities for disadvantaged young adults, Around and Around.

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Alec Rose’s global circumnavigation aboard Lively Lady, a 36 foot yacht. The yacht was gifted to Portsmouth City Council by Sir Alec Rose and is now leased to the charity Around and Around. With a group of 38 disadvantaged young adults, Alan completed another global circumnavigation in the yacht between 2006 and 2008. Subsequently, Alan and volunteers at Around and Around worked hard to restore Lively Lady to top condition in advance in the anniversary celebrations and give her a new lease of life for the future.

Alan describes himself as a ‘serial adventurer’. He started sailing at the age of 8 and owned his own motorised dingy by the age of 11. He first met Sir Alec Rose at the age of 12 in 1965 and became an instant fan. He followed his passage all the way around the world and was there to greet him when he came back in 1968. It was this experience that set him on his path of determination.

His sailing achievements include an impressive 37 world records, 18 British national records, and 3 lifetime achievements. In 2017 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for Services to Adventure and Science in recognition of his achievements. In addition, he has had his own business remanufacturing gearboxes since 1970.

Tonight will also be our first Open Evening of the year. This evening will give potential new members a chance to view the Club and learn about the many social, sailing, and training opportunities that we provide.
