Commodore's Calvados Cruise
The Commodore's Calvados Cruise will be a journey through important events in English and British history from William the Conquerer to the D Day landings. It will start in Cherbourg on 7 July and finish in Honfleur on 18 July
The itinerary will be as follows:
7 July. Rally meetup in Cherbourg with pontoon party in evening
8 July. Sail to St Vaast la Houge. The sight where Edward III landed in 1346. The 28 mile sail will pass close to Barfleur where, in 1120, the White Ship, carrying Henry I's son and heir William of Adelin sunk and led to the Anarchy, the civil war between Matilda and Stephen.
9 July. Rest day in St Vaast
10 July. A 35 mile sail to Courseulles sur Mer, the centre of the Calvados region. A short detour from the rhum line will take you pass the Iles de Marcouf, captured by the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary wars and used as a base to disrupt shipping between Le Havre and Cherbourg, and then take you along Utah beach, Omaha Beach and Gold beach. The possibility of a picnic stop inside the Mulberry harbour but take care of the Rochers du Calvados.
11 July. Rest day in Courseulles.
12 July. Sail 14 miles to Ouistreham.
13 July. Up the canal to Caen. A distance of 7.5 mile. Pass through the Pegasus Bridge, scene of heavy fighting on D Day. Visit the museum.
14 July. Rest Day in Caen. Besieged and captured by Edward III in 1346. Visit the castle, built by William the Conquerer and the Abbaye-aux-hommes, where he is buried, or take a train to Bayeux to visit the tapestry telling the story of the Battle of Hastings. Bastille Day fireworks in the evening.
15 July. Return up the canal to Ouistreham and then sail 21 miles to Deauville past the D day beaches of Juno and Sword.
16 July. Rest day in Deauville. Lose all your money in the casino.
17 July. Sail 13 miles to Honfleur.
18 July. Rest day in Honfleur with the rally dinner in the evening.
19 July. Sail for home.
The cost of the rally has not been finalised but will be posted as soon as it is available. Bookings will open when a fee has been decided
