St Vaast harbour

A rally to St Vaast is planned for the late May Bank Holiday 23 to 24 May 2015. On Saturday 23 May HW St Vaast is 1312 BST  and the gate will be open from 1110 BST until 1622 BST. (Gate times are available here) On Friday evening sunset isn't until 2050 and sunrise on Saturday is at 0510 and so there will be plenty of daylight with only a short period of the crossing in darkness. From the central Solent the distance is about 80 M and so boats capable of 5 or 6 knots should be able to do it in 13 to 16 hours.

A pontoon party will be held on Saturday when the gate closes around 1630. I have had some difficulty arranging a restauant that is big enough to cope with the numbers that may attend and there is always the problem that a gale blows up the channel that week end and nobody makes it to St Vaast. Instead it will be up to crews to organise their own eating arrangements for the evening but a "pontoon picnic" will be arranged for Sunday lunch at 1200 French summer time with foods obtained from M Gosselin's emporium. The gate will remain open until 1700BST (1800 French time).

A "Fast Cruise" will be arranged with a bottle of something for the quickest boat on LSC corrected time. There will be just 7 rules.

  1. Boats taking part must have an LSC handicap. Application forms are available on the Fast Cruise page
  2. Boats may start at either Bembridge Ledge ECM or Bridge WCM.
  3. Pass 3M north and east of a circle based on Barfleur Light.
  4. Finish when Le Gavendest SCM is in transit with La Dent SCM leaving both to starboard.
  5. Sail (no engines) between the start and the finish.
  6. Arrive to enter St Vaast during the Saturday afternoon opening of the gate.
  7. Text your time to +44 7778 362722 before the gate closes.

The Fast Cruise Instructions are below.

On Sunday HW St Vaast is 1359 BST with the gate opening from 1201 BST until 1700 BST. Leaving just before the gate closes would see you returning to the Solent just after sunrise on Monday morning.

The cost of the Rally will be £19 per person to cover the food and drink for the pontoon party and pontoon pic-nic. Please click the BOOK ONLINE NOW link below.
