The Little Ship Club is returning to Yarmouth and the Royal Solent Yacht Club for its first cruising rally of the 2018 summer sailing season. The LSC had established a tradition over many years of holding its first rally of the new season over the early May bank holiday at Yarmouth. Variously known as the Start of the Season Rally, or the Vice Commodore’s Rally it was a highlight of the Club’s sailing programme. However, the tradition was broken a few years ago when the Royal Solent became involved in managing a regatta over the early May week-end and was unable to accommodate the LSC. But, the tradition is being revived this year and we are back at the Royal Solent, now an LSC reciprocal club.

Saturday, 5 May

This rally is being organised as a two-day event with a ‘cocktail hour’ on Saturday 5 May from 18.30 to 19.30 in the bar on the first floor of the Royal Solent YC with its splendid views of the western Solent and, if the weather is accommodating, a brilliant sunset. Dinner will be served in the adjoining room at 19.45. The Royal Solent can accommodate up to 80 people, and we are hoping for a large turnout of LSC members, crews and guests to celebrate the start of the new season and to renew past friendships. Hopefully, those members who attended at Yarmouth in past years will have enjoyable memories and be keen to revisit. With numbers limited to 80 it may be wise for members to make their reservations early. Berths have been reserved at Yarmouth Harbour on the ‘walk ashore pontoon’ for overnight stays on both Saturday 5 May and Sunday 6 May but firm bookings will only be made when boat names and details are given to the Harbour Master. Berthing costs are based on boat length but for vessels between 10.5m and 12m LOA the charge will be £33.50 per day/night, smaller boats less and bigger boats more. Electricity hook-up is £4.00 per visit. Skippers to make payment directly at the marina office

Sunday 6 May

There have been no formal activities organised in Yarmouth for Sunday, 6 May but various opportunities are available; if the weather is kind a walk alongside the River Yar to Freshwater for lunch at the Red Lion has always been a great favourite – but booking for lunch may be advisable, Elsewhere in West Wight there is much to see and do: take the chairlift to the Needles and Alum Bay and visit the glass works, or spend a day, or part of it, at Totland Bay, a classic seaside resort, all of these can be reached by local bus services from Yarmouth, or take the Breezer bus for an open-top tour of the key sites  but if you wish to go wider afield hop-on/hop-off the Island Coaster service for a tour of West Wight. In the evening members are expected to make their own arrangements for dining, either aboard or at restaurants ashore, but in the latter case it may be useful to check on Sunday opening arrangements. If there is sufficient attendance and interest, and with weather permitting, we could organize a pontoon party on Sunday evening between 17.00 and 18.00 hours. More on that later but please indicate your interest.
