Is AIS a useful tool for cruising yachtsmen?

I’d like to hear from any member who has fitted AIS to their yacht. Have you fitted AIS? If so we’d like to hear from you and maybe those of us who haven’t yet taken the plunge can ask questions or comment on your experience.
- Did you fit a receiver or a transponder?
- What hardware did you fit and why?
- Why did you fit AIS?
- Was it easy to fit? How much did it cost?
- What benefits have you seen from it?
- Do you find you suffer from information overload when sailing in the Solent or similar water with AIS switched on?
- Do you switch your transmit off in crowded waters?
I’m sure other members would love to hear about why you did it and how you have found it – is it really a valuable navigation / safety feature or just another gadget to play with? Let us know by adding your comments to this article, or send an email to webeditor@littleshipclub.co.uk
