THE world’s wettest cricket match took place in the middle of The Solent at the weekend.

Once a year the Island Sailing Club (ISC) and the Royal Southern Yacht Club play cricket on the Brambles sandbank, which appears once a year at an unusually low tide between Southampton and the Island.

At around 7.30am on Saturday, dozens of boats sailed to wait for the sandbank to emerge from the sea.

The cricketers managed seven overs aside before the sea swallowed up the pitch for another year. The match was won by ISC. This was not, however, a surprise as the Clubs take it in turns to win. The winners host the losers to supper or, as this year, breakfast. A good spread was laid on at the ISC from 0930.

The Bramble Bank fixture was first started in the 1950s by the late Uffa Fox.
