Practical weather forecasting

This course is strictly practical, with only a small amount of meteorological theory. It is presently taught by a professional meteorologist from Imperial College, who is an experienced teacher and expert in seasonal forecasting, and a Club member who is also a member of the Royal Meteorological Society.

Traditional and modern electronic sources are brought together, with guidance on achieving independence when professional resources are not available, to enable the amateur sailor to produce a bespoke weather forecast. Special coverage is given to the popular cruising grounds: home waters, the Baltic, Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas; for 2022, we shall also be introducing some new material on weather in Arctic and tropical waters.

The course runs for four hours, over two weekday evenings, with an opportunity to practice weather chart construction between sessions. Included in the price is a very comprehensive handbook, which collates data and techniques from a wide range of sources, and a "Met. Officer’s Kit" of charts and tools.

Special note:

We know that some students’ knowledge of meteorology may be "rusty", or even non-existent. To help you obtain the most from the course, we distribute a short Revision Guide beforehand; you do not need a scientific or mathematical background to enjoy the course.

One month’s membership of the Club is included – why not give it a try?
