Doggett’s Coat and Badge and other Wagers.

The Company of Watermen of the River Thames established Henry VIII by Royal decree and later Act of Parliament. A guild with eccentric traditions and Wagers! And control. At a time when the population of London was 200,000, some 40,000 people worked on the river. One in five! Robert Hulse, Freeman, sixth generation of Watermen in his family, founding director of The Brunel Museum, will talk about events on the river and the origin of Doggett’s Coat and Badge Wager, oldest continuously held rowing race in the world, and other eccentric wagers and river events.
