A new navigation beacon has been established marking the northern extremity of the Shrape Mud off East Cowes. Several yachts and motor boats have found themselves aground on the mud each year which extends up to 370m offshore.

Although the introduction of the Shrape mark will be of assistance mariners are also asked to follow the recomendations contained within LNTM 10 of 2011 which requests that vessels when approaching/departing Cowes Harbour from/to the east pass to the north of all swinging moorings. During the hours of darkness this can be achieved by passing to the north of the lighted ‘Snowdon’ special mark Fl.Y.4s and due south of the Trinity House Buoy Fl.Y.5s before altering course for the harbour entrance.
