Photographic competition results

The 2012 Photographic Competition Prize giving was held on Tuesday 9 December 2012. We were delighted the Commodore, David Roache, was present for the prize giving. This year the efforts made in maximising publicity resulted in the organiser receiving 116 entries from more members than in 2011. Also, by special request, the organiser had been asked that one of the categories should be 'Art'. Any of those winning 1st prizes in 2011 were permitted to enter this category if they wished to do so. The organiser was also allowed to enter.
The judges for the four photographic categories were most of 2011’s 1st prize winners supplemented by many other members who had not submitted photographs to whom I am most grateful as the standard was particularly high. Our club secretary, Val Tumner and Margo, City Livery Club judged the art section assisted by a couple of LSC members. Again, the judges were asked to chose from all the numbered entries, the six they each liked best, in order of preference. The numbers chosen were fed into a spread-sheet to discover the results.
The presentation was slightly different in this year. All the short-listed photos were displayed as well as every other photograph submitted, below each the name of author and title. All art was also shown. The photographers were called forward together by commended, highly commended, 2nd prize and 1st prize to receive their certificates and prizes from the Commodore. The slide show showed all the photos in this reverse order. For the Art section, I stepped aside and handed the list of winning entries to David Roache, who did the honours. You will see why when you look at the pictures!
In future, so that no-one falls foul of the rules, please read them carefully. This year one person submitted photos that were too big, but luckily they were received before the closing date and correct sized ones could be submitted in time to qualify! The standard was extremely high and the prize for encouragement was given to Anne Tyrrell. Her photographs might well have been a winner last year when numbers entered were far smaller.
The winner of the photograph to be displayed in the Alan Walden Jones memorial silver frame will be announced at the HPO dinner in January 2013. It has been chosen by the Commodore, from all the photographs short listed in 2012 and is Andrew Wilson for his shot taken from 'Challenge Wales' which I hope will grace the front cover of The Little Ship Spring journal.
Finally, the CLOSING DATE for 2013 is the FIRST TUESDAY in NOVEMBER.
