Once more the weather systems were very volatile. For the third Fast Cruise in a row we had good winds on both the Friday and Sunday, with much lighter airs coming from the East on the Saturday. This provided a challenge for most participants to reach the first mark against the tide, with light following winds.

Naturally these conditions favoured those with spinnakers or cruising shutes / jennakers, who sped off into the distance whilst the slower amongst us made heavier weather of the course. The faster boats then benefited from a favourable tide, which had diminished somewhat by the time the slower boats made it round the mark.

The faster boats finished the course with ease, with a certain amount of 'friendly' jockeying for position at key points. The wind then eased for the smaller and slower boats, who struggled valiantly on with the majority succeeding in completing the course and recording a finish time (with the exception of the organisers who had to head for port in order to calculate the results in time for the Prize-Giving).

For the full and final results of the 2017-18 Series for both the LSC and Progressive Handicap systems, see the pdf links below.

The staff at Port Hamble Marina were very helpful and the first 5 boats to pay in the office were even rewarded with a complimentary bottle of wine each, which made sure the on-board pontoon parties got off to a good start!

We then enjoyed an excellent 3-course meal in the splendid surroundings of the Royal Southern YC, where the staff were very helpful and attentive.

We were delighted to welcome our Club President, Mike Golding OBE, who very kindly presented the prizes at the event and then regaled us with a terrifying story of his experience of sailing in the Southern Ocean.

Many thanks to Bill in particular (and others) for the photo loop which provided an entertaining background to the evening.

The next Fast Cruise Series will be a joint rally again with the South Coast Frostbite on Saturday, 13 October 2018 to Cowes Yacht Haven and RORC YC, Cowes for the end of season / First Fast Cruise 2018-19 Dinner. Booking details will be available nearer the date  In the meantime, please do let us know if you are planning to take part or would like to take part.
