LSC Basic Seamanship course

Basic ropework course | Little Ship Club

This course is an extended Club version of one we have delivered to Royal Navy midshipmen. It introduces practical seamanship which is designed to relate strictly to the requirements of modern cruisers. It is so popular that some members have attended twice, just for the fun of it, and brought their friends along.

All levels of ability are catered for, from the tyro to the “old salt”. The course begins with coiling a rope, proceeds through a carefully-selected minimal set of knots and techniques, and finishes with splicing rope to chain and an eye in three-strand material. It runs for a total of six hours, spread over three evenings.

Included in the price of the course is an illustrated handbook and a “bosun’s bag”, containing practice materials. By tradition, a glass of red wine is offered to lubricate proceedings.

One month’s membership of the Club is included – why not give it a try?

LSC Practical Weather Forecasting

Practical weather forecasting

This course is designed to build on the theory imparted in RYA shore-based courses and show how the amateur sailor can marshal a range of resources to produce a bespoke weather forecast. Synoptic, meso-scale and convective-scale data are brought together to take advantage of both traditional and modern electronic sources. Emphasis is laid on the integration of weather forecasting and passage planning to enable the yachtsman, in some cases, to forecast marine weather to a better standard than the professionals and to achieve some independence when professional resources are not available. Special coverage is given to British home and adjacent continental waters, together with the Baltic, Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas.

The course runs for four hours, spread over two weekday evenings with an opportunity to practice weather chart construction between sessions. Included in the price is a very comprehensive handbook which collates data and techniques from a wide range of sources, and a unique "Met. Officer Kit" of weather charts for use at sea.

We assume that students will have a knowledge of meteorology to Dayskipper level; for the benefit of students who may be "rusty", a short Revision Guide is distributed before the course starts. The course is presently delivered by an experienced racing sailor and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.

Cost for Members - £50
Cost for Non-Members - £75

RYA First Aid Course

RYA first aid course

Why do the course

Knowledge of First Aid makes a vital contribution to sea safety. Being able to manage medical emergencies before professional help arrives can make all the difference both to chances of survival and reducing the impact of serious conditions; on a more commonplace level, knowledge of elementary treatments can make a big difference to crew comfort, which in turn makes a significant contribution to safety. This one-day course is also a pre-requisite for the RYA’s Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore practical examinations.

Content

Resuscitation of the unconscious and immobilisation in the case of broken limbs are the obvious serious conditions covered. Elementary recognition of the symptoms of likely conditions and their treatment are also discussed. Man-overboard situations and hypothermia are treated in some detail. The Club’s course is kept up to date by reference to the latest medical opinion.

The price of the course includes a professional handbook and the standard fee for issue of the RYA’s First Aid certificate.

Cost for Members - £100
Cost for Non-Members - £145
