RYA Day Skipper Theory Course

A comprehensive introduction to cruising for new and less experienced sailors. The course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate in familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

Course topics include:

The basics of seamanship
The Essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
Chart work
Electronic charts
Position fixing
Plotting a course to steer
Weather forecasting and meteorology
Tides
Collision regulations
Construction, parts & equipment of a cruising boat
Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and life rafts.

Included in the price is the RYA’s Day Skipper student pack; a set of navigational instruments is available at a discounted price.

Options

The Club runs two versions of the course.

Option 1 - Our traditional long course for Day Skipper is on 7pm to 9pm Mondays at the Club and lasts about 22 weeks.

Option 2 - Accelerated Course - about 10 weeks - is around 44 hours of tuition on 10 Wednesdays from 1900-2100 and five Saturday classes from 0930-1630 (spaced at fortnightly intervals)

The Club’s special Basic Rope Work course is very popular with sailors of all types and levels of ability, and was originally developed to provide an easy “bridge” between the Day Skipper shore-based course and the Day Skipper on-the-water course. It can be taken either before or after the Day Skipper course.

The Little Ship Club is a Social Sailing Members club in the City of London's City and a RYA Training center. RYA shore-based courses.
