Floating ice cream?

If you're peckish or in need of refreshment (not after a Little Ship Club dinner of course), look out for the latest twist on the ice cream van. The rumour was that their tune was We are Sailing, but it sounds more like the hornpipe.....

Belladonna is optimised for racing and includes carbon 3DL sails. The IRC rating is 1.122 and she will be competing in IRC Class 0. Due to a last minute cancellation, some berths have become available at £400 per head.

Pelican Racing launches kids' sailing

Pelican Racing, who hosted succcessful and exciting Laser SB3 days for the club last year, are introducing sailing training sessions for children of 7 to 11 years old, in their fleet of Laser Bugs. The sessions of 1, 2 or 5 days are aimed at children who want to get started in dinghy sailing during the school holidays.

Flag overboard: have you lost your ensign?

A Little Ship Club defaced ensign, still attached to its staff, has been rescued mid-Channel between Cherbourg and the Needles.

Fastnet and fundraising too

On August 14 this year I hope to take part in the Fastnet Race on board Juno, Charles Whittam's X34 yacht. We still have a number of qualifying miles to complete before the entry is accepted but if we do compete I will use the Fastnet Race to raise some money in aid of Diabetes UK.

Fidelio of London

Fidelio finishes her world lap

On 6th June 2011, Fidelio of London completed her global circumnavigation, in 13 years 44 days, for a total of 47,792 nautical miles. Fidelio is a Najad 371, built in 1987. Her crew was Anne & Ian Gatenby, ably assisted by a Hydrovane which steered her virtually all the way. We did not cruise in company, but were in daily short wave radio contact with other cruisers, exchanging weather and other information.

Slippery K currently lying 1st in class 2

The front runners had a good weekend flying down the track to St Miguel , all eight leading boats recorded 24 hr runs of over 200 miles made good Sunday to Monday, with La Promesse  making 283 miles - an average of just under 12 kts. Sandy is in front of class 2. Leave him a message here

Setting up tracking for the RTIR

This year the ISC have apps for all the main phone platforms allowing boats entered in the RTIR to be tracked on the RTIR boat tracker (Try entering 6X). We are encouraging all the club boats to set up tracking so that members can follow the excitement in real time. It was dead easy to set up.

ISC tried this last year but have introduced a raft of new features this year based on last year's learning. In particular more than one device can be set up for each boat allowing better power management across a number of devices and for varied network coverage around the Wight.

Odin and the front of the Wight

With strong southwesterly winds forecast for the Solent, expected to be on the nose from West Princessa cardinal to St Catherine's Point (the plan was to go round clockwise for the first time), it was a distinct possibility that we were not going to make it round the Back of the Wight, the first time in three years of Keith's rally that Odin would not manage it.

AZAB - 24 hour round up

The fleet enjoyed their first night settling in to a fast reach under white sails as the northerly breeze built to 20 knots and two meter waves there was enough spray coming aboard to keep the watch keepers awake in the small hours. LSC member Sandy Guest on Slippery K is currently in 30th place. But with a tcf of 0.934 he's probably in the top twenty on corrected time.

Showtime at Skandia Sail for Gold regatta

Skandia Sail for Gold is the sixth event on this year’s ISAF Sailing World Cup, reason enough to make it important. But this year, it’s also a big deal for a whole set of other reasons and they are all connected to the venue – the 2012 race courses out on Weymouth Bay. Read coverage every day on the Racing Pages
