Russian yacht completes Arctic circumnavigation

A Russian yacht has succeeded where John Franklin failed 163 years ago.

The Russian yacht has returned to its home port of St Petersburg after setting a new record with a round-the-world voyage through the Arctic Ocean, including both the north-east and north-west passages.

Cheap coach deals to get to Boat Show

Chance of a lifetime for young sailors

UKSA in Cowes is offering seven young people the chance of a lifetime to train for a career in the maritime industry, thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme.  Each trainee will take part in UKSA’s Go Beyond programme, with the funding covering the cost of careers advice, training courses, safety equipment, accommodation and catering.

Royal Dorset YC closed for refurbishment

The Royal Dorset Yacht Club in Weymouth has informed us that they are closing the club for refurbishment this winter from January to early March.  They look forward to welcoming visitors again in a much improved club for next season.

For those who know Poole Harbour well, access to Holes Bay (at the northern end of the harbour) has always been problematic, with access limited only to regular opening times through Poole Bridge. At the moment there is little for yachts to do above Poole Bridge, other than to explore more of the harbour, but Cobbs Quay Marina does have visitor’s berths available.

The Solent was lashed by storms this week with winds up to 50 knots recorded at Chichester Bar. The scene at Southsea Seafront on Thursday afternoon was one of exciting chaos with waves sufficiently high for the road to be closed.

East Coast boathouse fund on target

Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI Floating Boathouse Appeal has just reached the £100,000 milestone. A floating boathouse is required at Burnham for its new Atlantic 85 lifeboat, due to be placed on station in the spring of 2011.
